Technique – die cutting

Featuring die cutting

Pocketful o’ posies

Happy Friyay friends!

Life just got a little busy so now I’m playing catch up with The Daily Marker 30 Day colouring challenge and my wood stamp challenge. This is my colouring for Day 12. I decided to play along with the current CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. I love how they have such unusual sketches! I immediately thought of my Hero Arts stamps when I saw this one. Back in the day (15 years ago apparently!), Hero Arts produced the ‘Pocket O’ Posies’ sets – a trio of flower stamps in a little box. I LOVED them and collected quite a few sets. I used the Country Garden Posies for this card.

To be honest, I’m not sure about this card now that I have completed it. I feel like I should tweak something, but not sure what. So instead I shall walk away and look at it again tomorrow!

The sentiment is also by Hero Arts and I used dies by My Favorite Things and Simon Says Stamp.

Bali Corner

Hi there!

It’s time for a new challenge at AAA Cards! The theme for this fortnight is ‘one corner’ with the optional twist of flowers. Our sponsor is Uniko.

What a fun challenge… I love using flowers on my cards, especially at this time of year! After spending some time going through my wood mounted stamps, I decided to use a die! The Memory Box Bali corner die seemed made for this challenge – and I had a lot of fun colouring it in the current CAS Colours and Sketches colour combo (coral, grape and meadow)!

I added a sentiment from Reverse Confetti and a few mini gems to finish off my card.

My team mates have come up with some beautiful cards which are on the AAA Cards challenge blog. We are also joined by the talented Maja – she has some amazing cards on her blog!

Greetings window

Hello everyone!

OK, so I know when I planned my wood-mounted stamp challenge, I earmarked July for using my Christmas stamps. However, it seems I can’t wait for Christmas in July! It’s just Day 6 of the latest Daily Marker 30 Day Colouring challenge and my personal wood stamp challenge and I’ve already inked up a Christmas stamp!

In my defence, when I saw the Stampendous Greetings Window in one of my stamp boxes, I knew it would fit the CAS Christmas challenge so well that I just HAD to use it! The theme of the challenge this month is ‘gifts’ and I thought this stamp would be perfect for that!

I decided to use a sketch from a new-to-me challenge, TGIF Challenges, so my first step was to choose some patterned paper. I had my doubts about using a gift-themed paper as I was a bit concerned that it would be too matchy-matchy… but I think it works OK in the end. After embossing the image, I coloured it using my Twinkling H2O paints and then adhered it to my base card using sticky fixers. Et voila! Super quick and easy Christmas card done! Must remember this design when I create cards for the Caring Hearts drive later this year.

Yay!

Hello everyone!

Day 5 of the latest Daily Marker 30 Day Colouring challenge and my personal wood stamp challenge.

Today I’m playing along with the latest Case This Sketch challenge with the fabulous new colour combo over at the Color Throwdown (pink, aqua, lavender and mint).

I must admit, I spent a LONG time mulling over my entry for the sketch challenge. It’s a fabulous sketch but I wanted to use a wood-mounted sentiment stamp AND incorporate some colouring! Eventually I alighted on one of my newer wood stamps, Yay by Hero Arts. I embossed it using white powder, masked off the letters and blended some Distress Oxide over the background before colouring the letters using my Zig Color Clean Brush markers and some regular distress ink.

Then I had to figure out what to use on the background – as I didn’t feel one of my leafy swirl dies would fit with the sentiment. I was flicking through my dies and stumbled on the Hero Arts Party Confetti Fancy background die and thought its elements could work quite nicely with a bit of careful placement. So I cut it from a distress oxide panel and arranged the streamers in a similar pattern et voila! My completed entry!

Stretching dye ink pads

Hello!

I’m here with my first  Crafts-U-Love DT post for the quarter.

This time, I received the fabulous Penny Black Floral Silhouette stamp set* and a pack of Lawn Fawn ink cubes*. Crafts-U-Love has kindly given me a discount code for you to use for these products – just add LUCIE20 at checkout.

I love Penny Black products as their clear stamp sets include many amazing images which stamp beautifully – I was delighted with my DT package! I’ve created quite a few cards with this set, which I will be sharing during the rest of the month.

For today’s post I wanted to share an easy way of stretching dye inks, like the Lawn Fawn inks, that I learned from the great crafting guru, Mr Tim Holtz. The technique is called ‘highlight stamping’ and whilst Tim used Distress inks when he taught it, I wanted to try it with non-distress dye inks. Translucent dye inks are impacted by the colour of the background that they are used on and can end up looking quite different on a dark surface. Highlight stamping is a great way of getting dye inks to ‘pop’ on coloured cardstock.

Step 1 – stamp image in white on dark cardstock

I chose a larger image from the set and applied some white ink. Tim used Picket Fence Distress ink for this technique but you can use another white ink, like the Ranger white pigment ink at this stage.

If you have a stamp positioner, you may want to stamp the image a couple of times to get good, even coverage.

Leave the image to dry or speed up the process using a heat tool – it’s important for this technique that this layer of ink is completely dry before you move on to step 2.

Step 2 – stamp the image using coloured dye ink

I applied two inks to the stamp. (The dye inks may pool a little once applied to the stamp. I find they stamp a little more evenly if I breathe over the inked-up stamp just before stamping.)

For this technique, you should offset this stamped image a little so that the white ink is completely exposed in some places and completely covered by the dye ink in other places. If you have a stamp positioner you might want to use it for this step to improve ink coverage.

As you can see, the dye inks become quite vibrant when you stamp them over the white ink and those white lines around the image create a wonderful highlight. The intensity of the colour will fade a little as the dye ink dries – here you can see my dry test image on the left compared with the freshly-stamped image that I created for this post on the right.

I also used the same Lawn Fawn inks on white cardstock  – isn’t it interesting to see how they stamp on the different colour surfaces!

To complete the cards, I made a mask using an oval die and then used this to carefully blend ink around the image. I used white ink on the kraft card; for the white card, I applied a third colour, Butter, from the Lawn Fawn ink set.

For the kraft card, I then simply cut a sentiment from the Karen Burniston Words Set 1 – Greetings dies set from white card and adhered it to my card base before adding a few gems* to finish off the card.

I wanted to tweak the design of the white card a little so trimmed the panel at both sides. I then blended the Butter ink to both sides of my card base and adhered the image panel on top, creating two narrow yellow strips. I blended more Butter ink onto some spare white card and used this to cut another sentiment from the same die set. Finally I added more gems to the card.

Distress Oxide inks have been released since I learnt this technique and they stamp amazingly on dark cardstock. Nevertheless, I still think that this technique will stand the test of time as it’s a quick and easy way of stretching dye inks on darker cardstock.

I do hope you give it a go, even if you have the Distress Oxides. Please let me know in the comments below if you do try it – I’d love to see what you create with it!

Get Well Bouquet

Hi everyone!

I just saw a fabulous colour combo over at the Paper Players’ current challenge (purple, green and yellow), so I grabbed a Memory Box die and got to work!

I cut the Blushing Bouquet die from white card which I coloured using my Twinkling H2Os. I added some extra detail to the petals using a coloured pencil.

I adhered the die cut to a base that I’d embossed with a Spellbinders folder and added a Memory Box stamped sentiment.

The current Memory Box challenge is to use a button(s) and I noticed that the dimpled centres of the flowers might tie in quite nicely with a button or two. I then spent AGES going through my massive button collection and playing around with positioning of said buttons! In the end I decided less is more and just added one button and a few dew drops to finish off my card.
